Meet the founder

From a Cardiff academy debut to a seven-country playing career — now passing it forward in Bridgend.

I came through the Cardiff City academy from the age of twelve, training alongside Aaron Ramsey, before lining up with Gareth Bale in the Wales U17 to U21 squads a few years later. I made my senior debut for Cardiff in February 2008, and from there the game took me to clubs in seven countries across four continents.

I played in the English non-league with Wrexham, Hereford, Southport and AFC Telford; in Australia with Central Coast Mariners; in Belgium and Thailand; and in Bangladesh with Abahani Limited Dhaka, where I was fortunate enough to win the Bangladesh Premier League in 2015–16. I spent six years in the States playing for OKC Energy FC in the USL Championship.

The last year of my career I spent playing for my local club Penybont, before hanging up the boots. I set up JB17 Performance to pass on what a career like that teaches you — not the glamorous parts, but the daily habits that actually move a player forward. The technique. The decision-making. The mentality to keep turning up when nothing's clicking.

Meet Josh

From Wales youth caps to four years coaching at Penybont — now part of the JB17 team.

With a lifelong passion for football, I began playing at the age of six and quickly progressed through the ranks, earning two Boys' Clubs of Wales caps at Under-14 and Under-16 level. I went on to compete in the Alliance Premier League between the ages of 16 and 20, gaining valuable experience in a highly competitive environment.

Alongside my playing career, I earned a degree in Sports Coaching, further strengthening my understanding of player development and performance. I then transitioned into coaching, where I have built a strong reputation for developing individuals and teams. I currently hold a UEFA Licence and have coached at institutions including Bridgend College, as well as Penybont, where I have spent the past four years helping to nurture talent and build high-performing teams.

Our methodology

Rooted in UEFA principles, sharpened by 12+ years in the professional game.

What that looks like in practice is all-round, player-centred development — every session is shaped around the player in front of us, not a generic template.

We balance technical skills (dribbling, passing, shooting), tactical awareness (positioning, decision-making), physical conditioning (speed, strength) and psychological growth (focus, resilience).

Sessions begin with dynamic warm-ups, followed by progressive drills that build from foundations to game-like scenarios — ensuring fun and engagement at every level.

Advanced and academy groups add competitive simulations. 1-to-1 sessions deliver hyper-personalised feedback. Girls-only groups prioritise inclusion and confidence. Every plan adapts to the individual.
